Recho Kombo (13yrs) being shown how to use a telescope by optometrist Julius Ngoje. All people with albinism experience low vision. Recho is very myopic (short-sighted) and has bad nystagmus (involuntary flicker of the pupils caused by the retina trying to focus on an image), which beyond eight years old is difficult to correct as the brain and retina are fully formed. Glasses won't help her so her only chance of seeing the black board is a small magnifying telescope. Makalala Primary School, Mafinga, Tanzania. 2008 |
