Shoba's mother had prayed to Yellamma for a daughter and promised to dedicate her if she had one.  Shoba was born but her mother forgot her pact with the goddess until, when Shoba was 5 years old, a white spot appeared on her leg.  Skin diseases are often seen as a sign of neglecting Yellamma.
